What changes from 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026, the obligation to use a tachograph will also cover light commercial vehicles with a permissible gross weight from 2.5 to 3.5 t, if they are used in international road transport of goods or in cabotage for hire and reward.

What this means in practice

For many companies that until now carried out transport with vans and were not subject to the same obligation as heavier vehicles, this means a need to prepare in advance:

Checking which vehicles are subject to the changes
Determining the scope of the necessary additional equipment or adaptation
Planning dates
Preparing the organisation of drivers' work
Organising documentation and procedures

Important clarification

The new requirements do not automatically mean that every van 2.5–3.5 t used locally or exclusively domestically will be subject to an identical obligation. The nature of the transport is decisive.

The scope of application of the regulations is always worth confirming against the specific business model, type of transport and vehicle status. This page is informational and offer-oriented and does not replace legal advice.

This subpage is for you if

  • You use vans 2.5–3.5 t in international transport
  • You perform cabotage
  • You want to check whether your fleet needs to prepare for the changes
  • You need tachograph calibration
  • You are looking for a partner combining technical support with an understanding of the transport industry

Why it is not worth leaving this to the last minute

The closer the regulations come into force, the greater the load on workshops, service points and companies operating in a short time frame may be. Preparing in advance allows you to:

  • Reduce the risk of downtime
  • Plan the budget better
  • Determine which vehicles are actually subject to the changes
  • Avoid organisational chaos just before the deadline

What is worth preparing before contact

To determine more quickly how we can help, it is worth preparing:

  • A list of vehicles
  • The GVW of each vehicle
  • Information on whether the vehicles perform international transport or cabotage
  • The planned implementation date
